"TouchGraph "Visual Search Engine
TouchGraph is one of those services that will surprise you its features the first time you try it. TouchGraph lets you navigate information returned from Google, Amazon, and Facebook in a visual format right on their site. Other services have integrated TouchGraph’s visual organization functionality as well.
Google
After logging in to the TouchGraph Google browser, you input a search term just like you would on Google. The site queries Google, and returns the information in a visual format. The site returns what looks to be a mindmap layout of the search results with logos for each site and lines between the results form interconnecting webs. You can scroll through the world of your search results and the site moves and flows with the cursor. Your results are organized into clusters which you can color code and organize in any way you like.
Facebook
You can log in to the TouchGraph platform directly through Facebook, and I must say this may be my favorite use of this technology. Your friends and your friends’ photos are automatically imported into TouchGraph and they are organized by location. It is a really interesting way to see your friends, and to see relationships between your friends. You can adjust spacing, zoom in and out, and you can view photos from your friends on different networks. Interestingly, you can also see which of your friends have the most photos together.

You can add genre tags, sort by artist, album, or label and you can see the prices of the material you are looking at.

Ajay Goel, 29, was living with his parents in 2000 when he created the first version of JangoMail as a side project for a client who needed a web-based e-mail marketing solution. Because he had a computer and no overhead, Goel was able to fine-tune the product, then take it to market.
JangoMail, with its web-based e-mail broadcasting and marketing system that allows companies to create, send and track e-mail campaigns, projects sales of $5 million for 2007. While the four-person company works virtually, Goel invested in 900 square feet of office space in Dayton, Ohio, to give the company a home base and employees a place to work when they come to town.
JangoMail has grown mostly through referrals, networking and search engine advertising, landing clients like the American Cancer Society and Nokia. Instead of expanding through additional products or line extensions, JangoMail remains the company's sole offering, available through its website. Goel is constantly tinkering and adding features. "I wanted to operate with a salesperson-less model," he says. "We are there if customers need us, but they can buy the product on their own."

Expensr lets you compare your financial picture to other people who are like you, based on tags. first tag yourself "married," "India," and "hedge fund manager Then you can see how much other married hedge fund manager are spending on rent, and if you're living at a level above or below your peers. Or you can look up data for other tags, to see, for instance, what engineers in Houston are making. You do have to trust that other users are as rigorous with their Expensr data entry as you are: If you reliably enter in all your dining out expenses, but other users tagged the same as you are do not, then you might think that you're overspending when you're just being more compulsive about your bookkeeping than everyone else. (I couldn't use this feature because none of the tags I tried had enough users to generate statistical data.)
The service has several features that are standard for online financial applications. It's easy and simple to create accounts, enter transactions, and see graphs and charts of where your money is going.
Expensr is easy to use -- much easier than the default financial app for most people, Quicken (the 2007 version of which I found intolerably buggy). While Quicken also offers tracking, as well as nice charts and graphs, getting basic data and analysis out of Expensr is much faster than getting it from Quicken. And if you only have a few accounts, getting data in can be almost as fast, since Expensr reads OFX files from banks (Quicken can automate downloads, though, which is a plus).

He Made Millions,Selling WhiteBoards To Hospitals
The doctors on NBC's "ER" series used a Magnatag on set to keep track of patients. This year, the New Orleans Saints mapped NFL draft picks on a Magnatag. A Colorado sheriff's posse swears by their Magnatag for plotting search-and-rescue mountain missions. "You can get to people faster," says volunteer Norvan Huff.
For 20 years, a little known company called Magnatag Visible Systems in Macedon, N.Y., has thrived making highly specialized versions of an item that couldn't be less special -- the erasable whiteboard. In the commoditized world of office products, this is no small feat. Basic, cheap whiteboards flood the shelves of office-supply stores. There are dozens of higher-end brands aimed at the professional market and classrooms. So universal is the whiteboard as a teaching tool, that UPS has made one the centerpiece of its current ad campaign "Whiteboard" to educate consumers about its services.
So how does a tiny manufacturing shop tucked away on the shores of the Erie Canal compete amid the fray? The answer: by taking the common out of the commodity. Instead of mass-producing generic boards, Magnatag goes the opposite route, selling whiteboard systems tailored for hundreds of applications, from athletic scheduling and church groups, to hospitals and mortgage brokers. Instead of a plain, white surface, Magnatag boards are printed with customized grids and graphics and come with equally specific supplies such as magnets, lettering, symbols and card holders.
A manufacturing plant seeking to reduce on-the-job injuries might post a "SafetyCross Safety Motivational System," which uses a variety of green, yellow and red magnets in the shape of a cross to highlight "accident-free" days. A sales operation with a large fleet of cars could opt for the "Vehicle Service Monitor" with specific columns dedicated to inspection needs. There are boards for advertising agencies and music instructors. The White House Communications Agency this month purchased a 4'x8' MagnaStaffer organizational chart.

So specific are Magnatag's applications that the company's 75-year-old founder, Wally Krapf, chafes at being dubbed a whiteboard maker. "Our boards are problem-solving devices -- they are aspirins for people's headaches," he says.

Due to volume of kits -- more than 2,300 -- Magnatag boards can't be found at retail; Mr. Krapf sells only via his own Web site and catalog. But turnaround time is quick: Boards typically ship within three business days, a byproduct of Mr. Krapf's meticulous inventory management. To date, he's sold more than half a million boards and says Magnatag's revenue is "in excess of $10 million and quite a bit above."
That's a small slice of the overall whiteboard market, estimated at roughly $2 billion in annual sales world-wide with about half coming from the U.S., according to one of the largest players, Acco Brands Corp. of Lincolnshire, Ill. Acco, which also owns well-known office supply brands such as Swingline and Day-Timer, markets its whiteboards under the Quartet name and sells to consumers and businesses mainly through big-box office-products chains such as Office Depot. "We're more mass scale than specialized niche product," says Acco spokesman Richard Nelson.
Other U.S. manufacturers have notable chunks of the business, though few if any produce the array of applications that Magnatag does. "We do some customization, but people still prefer plain in the marketplace," says John Rouse, senior vice president of Ghent Manufacturing Inc., a large whiteboard manufacturer in Lebanon, Ohio. Other producers, such as Marsh Industries Inc. in New Philadelphia, Ohio, focus on niches such as the educational market. Still, "to some extent, one board does look like another," says Bill Singhaus, Marsh's executive vice president of sales and marketing.

Bootstrapping Your Business: Start and Grow a Successful Company With Almost No Money
Rags-to-riches entrepreneurs don't usually brag about crashing on a friend's couch and eating cheap food. But John Vechey, 28, proudly recalls the early penny-pinching days of his Seattle gaming company, PopCap Games, which he co-founded with partners Brian Fiete, 29, and Jason Kapalka, 36, in 2000. After leaving their steady jobs at gaming companies, the trio pooled $100 to purchase business cards, used their own computers and convinced a friend who owned an ISP to give them server space for free. Working first from Fiete's condo, then from Vechey's apartment, they started with a simple business model--to make games and license them to websites.
In doing research for his book, Bootstrapping Your Business: Start and Grow a Successful Company With Almost No Money, Greg Gianforte found that less than 1 percent of startups raise money. A bootstrapper himself, Gianforte started RightNow Technologies in Bozeman, Montana, in 1997, went public in 2004 and had 2006 revenue of more than $110 million. He says having an open mind and experimenting are key. "Once you have scale and mass, you do things differently," Gianforte says. "In the early startup phase, you can throw things up against the wall and see what sticks."
That's what Amy James did. After selling her first company in 2000, the former teacher negotiated the right to retain a database of state learning standards that she had spent two years typing into a Microsoft Access file. In 2001, James decided to take advantage of that year's No Child Left Behind Act and put her database to work. "I made a flier saying I could align curriculum with learning standards and faxed it to publishers," she says. "Scholastic called immediately. Then LeapFrog. Then others."
For the cost of office supplies--about $100--James was in business, launching SixThings from her New York City apartment. She made $30,000 her first year, consulting with publishers, reviewing educational programs and curricula, and writing reports analyzing how these measured up to state and federal learning and testing requirements. James ramped up significantly in her second year, hiring two curriculum development employees and one computer programmer. In addition to analysis, the company now sells electronic databases of learning and testing requirements and licenses software that provides compliance reporting along state and federal guidelines.
But James was struggling to pay her rent and knew something had to give. Her mother was a retired teacher back in her hometown near Oklahoma City, and James could tap her mom's friends as workers. So she moved into the same apartment complex as her mother.
"It just made sense," says James, 40. "My mom's friends were starting to retire. My dad was a principal. They were all on state benefits and had a great work ethic." With her mother as her first Oklahoma employee and her father as a sounding board, she began to rebuild her business.
James used open source software and worked from home for the first three years of business, finally moving into a 6,000-square-foot Oklahoma City office space in 2004. She furnished that space, including the refrigerator, she says proudly, for a mere $1,900 by visiting vacated offices and offering cash for the abandoned furniture. She continues to pinch pennies, even after bringing in sales of more than $2.1 million last year. Of her 20 full-time and 43 part-time employees, the vast majority are her parents' retired friends. She has also re-established an office in New York City.

Ajay Goel, 29, was living with his parents in 2000 when he created the first version of JangoMail as a side project for a client who needed a web-based e-mail marketing solution. Because he had a computer and no overhead, Goel was able to fine-tune the product, then take it to market.
JangoMail, with its web-based e-mail broadcasting and marketing system that allows companies to create, send and track e-mail campaigns, projects sales of $5 million for 2007. While the four-person company works virtually, Goel invested in 900 square feet of office space in Dayton, Ohio, to give the company a home base and employees a place to work when they come to town.
