Chinese online video Web site Hupo.TV, backed by Internet entrepreneur Brad Greenspan, landed an exclusive partnership with China government-backed pop radio station Music Radio, the company said on Wednesday.
Hupo.TV, which draws more than 30 million unique monthly visitors, will manage Music Radio's Web site as well as its online marketing and events. Music Radio is part of China Central People's Broadcasting Station.
Greenspan once ran the company that owned the top Internet social network MySpace and most recently staged an unsuccessful bid to snatch Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones & Co Inc. from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
The 34-year-old executive sued News Corp last year for its $580 million purchase of MySpace's parent company, claiming the deal's low value defrauded shareholders.
Greenspan is chairman of BroadWebAsia, a financial backer of Hupo.TV.
"The Chinese Internet is on the verge of tremendous growth over the next 2-3 years to 250 million users," Greenspan said in a statement.

Online auction giant eBay has launched a microlending website that lets people invest in entrepreneurs in poor communities around the world and get a return on their money.
Unlike micro-finance organizations that make interest-free loans to people in developing countries, Microplace.com offers investors profits for funding folks trying to build better lives, said founder Tracey Turner.
“You are actually investing in the world’s working poor,” Turner told AFP. “And for the first time you get a return on investment. You can take the profit and invest in more people in a virtuous cycle.”
Turner’s vision of MicroPlace began taking shape in 2005, after she lived for a time with a Kenyan family comprised of a single mother caring for three children.
The Kenyan woman bought a sewing machine with $100 she borrowed and started an in-home business making school uniforms for local children.
The woman paid the debt and managed to send one of her sons to college in the United States.
“When you are out in the field talking to these women whose lives are transformed because of $30 or $10, then you are part of the movement forever,” Turner said.
California-based eBay bought Turner’s business plan in June of 2006 and the website launched 24 October of this year.
Website visitors can browse investors by country, seeing pictures of people seeking loans and reading about their business goals.
MicroPlace connects investors with micro-finance organizations in the various countries. MicroPlace scrutinizes the organizations to check their legitimacy.
“Our job is to vet,” Turner said. “We do a lot of research.”
Turner said rates of return are modest but that investors at the website see value in addressing global poverty. Lenders shoulder the risk that loans will not be repaid.
“The eye-opening thing for everyone is that repayment rates by the working poor remain unbelievably high, north of 98%,” Turner said.
Thousands of people visit the website daily and hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans have already been issued, according to MicroPlace. In keeping with the holidays, some have made gifts of loans by issuing in others’ names.
“What gets me out of bed in the morning is the idea that when you invest in a person it really honors them and enhances their dignity as a human being,” Turner said. “Which is different than a hand out.”
MicroPlace gets fees from microfinance organizations that get money through the website. Money is moved through online financial-transactions firm PayPal, which eBay owns.
“I think it is important everyone from the investor to the person making baskets in a village makes a profit,” Turner said. “The beauty and magic of micro-finance is that it is scalable. That is the only way it will scale.”
The company has promised that any profits made by MicroPlace will be invested in other initiatives for social good, according to Turner.
Pierre Omidyar, the eBay founder and his wife have channelled hundreds of millions of dollars into microloans through their own foundation and are investors in online microlending website Kiva.

Global Broadcast News Ltd would invest Rs500 crore in an entertainment venture with US media group Viacom Inc
The broadcaster of news channels CNN-IBN and IBN7, Global Broadcast News Ltd (GBN) on Tuesday said it would invest Rs500 crore in an entertainment venture with US media group Viacom Inc. and in launching regional news channels. The funds are to come in through foreign direct investment (FDI).
“The amount of Rs500 crore will go in launching a number of news channels in regional languages and in an entertainment venture with Viacom,” GBN joint managing director Sameer Manchanda said.
He said GBN had proposed to induct up to 26% FDI.
Its proposal was among the 19 FDI projects, amounting to Rs726.88 crore, approved by the government on Monday.
GBN, a part of the Network18 Group, has already announced the launch of a 24-hour Marathi language news and current affairs channel, through a 50:50 joint-venture with the Lokmat Group.
Manchanda said the company would launch a few more regional news channels in the future, but did not give details.
The company had raised around Rs105 crore through an initial public offering early this year and has also formed a joint venture with the Jagran group to bring out a business newspaper in Hindi.
The Network18 Group has also announced plans to enter the entertainment space with a 50:50 joint venture with Viacom. The company had raised around Rs105 crore through an initial public offering early this year and has also formed a joint venture with the Jagran group to bring out a business newspaper in Hindi.

Five Predictions For Future By IBM
Drained by your commute? Blood-sucking utility bills got you down? Wondering if that tomato in your dinner salad was really organic?
The cures to those ills and more may arrive within five years, according to IBM.
The company recently released its second annual set of "Next Five in Five" predictions, visions that sketch out a future where driving is a relative pleasure, eco-friendly devices save you money, and super doctors use advanced technology to probe your body's innermost depths in search of disease.
IBM's contention that driving will become safer and less aggravating may be particularly tantalizing for many.
The company said that during the next five years, a "wave of connectivity" between vehicles and roadways will help keep traffic flowing smoothly, drive down pollution, and get you to your destination easier, "without the stress."
This will be accomplished through "intelligent" traffic systems that automatically adjust light patterns and shift traffic to alternative routes, as well as cars that exhibit "reflexes" thanks to communication with other vehicles and roadside sensors, according to IBM.
The company's crystal ball also revealed that the long-simmering trend toward "smart energy" devices will proliferate wildly. "Dishwashers, air conditioners, house lights, and more will be connected directly to a 'smart' electric grid, making it possible to turn them on and off using your cell phone or any Web browser," a company statement asserts.
Even the act of eating will take on new meaning, in IBM's view: "You will know everything from the climate and soil the food was grown in, to the pesticides and pollution it was exposed to, to the energy consumed to create the product, to the temperature and air quality of the shipping containers it traveled through on the way to your dinner table."
The report also suggests that doctors' ability to heal us will become even more astounding. Due to advances in X-ray and audio technologies, doctors will gain "superpowers," according to IBM. Computers will also be able to compare your health data to an ocean's worth of other patient records, helping with diagnosis and treatment, the company said.
In addition, the company said cell phones will continue to grow in power and functionality. For example, phones will enable users to snap a photo of an article of clothing, pull in results from the Web about the brand and where to buy it, and then render the garment on top of a 3-D image of the user, IBM said.
IBM's list received a measured nod from Edward Cornish, editor of The Futurist magazine and past president of the World Future Society, an organization based in Bethesda, Maryland.
"Basically, the five forecasts seem to me to be quite reasonable," Cornish said. "They're based on technologies that have been around for a number of years and are simply extrapolations."
The Futurist has released its own list of predictions for 2008 and beyond.
The organization contends, among other things, that the world will have a billion millionaires by 2025; the earth is on the verge of a "significant extinction event;" and "nonhuman entities," such as robots fueled by artificial intelligence, will make more decisions.

In 2001, outraged at seeing 26 trees marked for destruction in her Gardena (Calif.) neighborhood because their growth was damaging area sidewalks, Lindsay Smith, a Hollywood screenwriter, unwittingly became an activist and an entrepreneur, soon launching Rubbersidewalks. TR: Google has many innovative products, but the look and feel of Web search hasn't changed much in 10 years. Why?
Peter Norvig: We've hit on something that people mostly liked. We weren't the first to do it. Go back to Excite and the search engines before: you have a box, and you get a list of 10 results, with a little bit of information accompanying each result. We've just stuck with that.
TR: What has changed?
PN: The scale. There's probably a thousand times more information. It used to be just Web pages; now it's video, pictures, blogs, and all sorts of media and formats. Also, the immediacy has changed. When I started, we were updating the index once a month. We thought of it as a library catalogue, a long-term thing. Now we're seeing it more as up-to-the-minute media. When news breaks, you want to be able to read it in minutes, not in days, weeks, or months.
TR: You claim that Google's accuracy is pretty good. How do you know how good it is, and how do you make it better?
PN: We test it in lots of ways. At the grossest level, we track what users are clicking on. If they click on the number-one result, and then they're done, that probably means they got what they wanted. If they're scrolling down, page after page, and reformulating the query, then we know the results aren't what they wanted. Another way we do it is to randomly select specific queries and hire people to say how good our results are. These are just contractors that we hire who give their judgment. We train them on how to identify spam and other bad sites, and then we record their judgments and track against that. It's more of a gold standard because it's someone giving a real opinion, but of course, since there's a human in the loop, we can't afford to do as much of it. We also invite people into the labs, or sometimes we go into homes and observe them as they do searches. It provides insight into what people are having difficulty with.
TR: Companies such as Ask and Powerset are betting that the future is in natural-language search, which lets people use real, useful sentences instead of potentially ambiguous keywords. What is Google doing with natural language?
PN: We think what's important about natural language is the mapping of words onto the concepts that users are looking for. But we don't think it's a big advance to be able to type something as a question as opposed to keywords. Typing "What is the capital of France?" won't get you better results than typing "capital of France." But understanding how words go together is important. To give some examples, "New York" is different from "York," but "Vegas" is the same as "Las Vegas," and "Jersey" may or may not be the same as "New Jersey." That's a natural-language aspect that we're focusing on. Most of what we do is at the word and phrase level; we're not concentrating on the sentence. We think it's important to get the right results rather than change the interface.
TR: How much will Google search become personalized to individual users?
PN: We're doing some of that in various places. One good example is in news personalization, where we give recommendations for news articles. There, it's easier to do than in larger Web databases, because there's a limited number of news stories. We track what news stories you look at, and we compare it to other people. And that seems to work out well. It's harder to apply it to something as vast as the whole Web, but we're starting with the easy parts.
TR: Where do you see Google search in two to five years?
PN: You'll see integration of various kinds of content. We're getting into speech recognition and all the kinds of interfaces on phones, where you have a tiny screen and awkward keyboard. You'll see that gaining in importance. You'll see integration of our various properties. We used to put the onus on the user and ask them if they wanted Web search or image search or video search. Now we're trying to solve that for them and serve up the results in a way that makes sense.

TR: Google has many innovative products, but the look and feel of Web search hasn't changed much in 10 years. Why?
Peter Norvig: We've hit on something that people mostly liked. We weren't the first to do it. Go back to Excite and the search engines before: you have a box, and you get a list of 10 results, with a little bit of information accompanying each result. We've just stuck with that.
TR: What has changed?
PN: The scale. There's probably a thousand times more information. It used to be just Web pages; now it's video, pictures, blogs, and all sorts of media and formats. Also, the immediacy has changed. When I started, we were updating the index once a month. We thought of it as a library catalogue, a long-term thing. Now we're seeing it more as up-to-the-minute media. When news breaks, you want to be able to read it in minutes, not in days, weeks, or months.
