Time is running out in the search for the Young Rural Entrepreneur of 2007.
Lycetts, the UK’s premier countryside insurance broker, is today urging entrepreneurs not to miss out on the prize of £10,000, to be awarded to this year’s Young Rural Entrepreneur.
The closing date for entries of 12th August is fast approaching for the prize to be given to an individual, under the age of 35, in recognition for their outstanding contribution to the UK’s rural economy.
Working in partnership with The Field magazine, the search to find the UK’s Young Rural Entrepreneur focuses specifically on businesses with a rural theme, and on the individuals behind them who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit coupled with a clear commitment to sustaining the rural economy.
If you, or someone you know, is making a lasting contribution to the benefit of the rural economy and communities, ensure that you don’t miss this opportunity by completing a short entry form online at www.thefield.co.uk. Five entries will be short-listed in August to present informally to a panel of judges in London on 12th September. All short-listed entries will benefit from being profiled in the October edition of The Field.
Angus Keate, chief executive of Lycetts, explains: “Already we have received a number of outstanding entries from a wide range of sectors. The winning entrepreneur can come from any type of business, whether as a result of farm diversification into more commercially orientated activities, or be it simply a new business start-up. What we are really interested to hear about is how the entrepreneur interacts with the countryside through their business.”
A panel of judges which includes: ‘The Black Farmer’, Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones; Caroline Dickinson, co-founder of The Real Soup Company; Nicholas Wheeler, founder of international tailor, Charles Tyrwhitt; Jonathan Young, editor of The Field; Angus Keate, chief executive of Lycetts; and Charles Seymour, managing director of Lycetts Rural Division, will choose the winner, to be announced at a reception in London on 18th October.
Nominations can be submitted by or on behalf of an individual who meets the awards criteria. For further information, please visit www.thefield.co.uk.

Venture Which Could Be Big
Compete provides website analytics available for free to all.
Compete is a competitor to Alexa. Finally Alexa has a competitor. Obviously there are closed systems such as Nielson and Comscore, however another free competitor to Alexa was long overdue.
Compete claims that they analyze the web browsing statistics of over 2,000,000 users click traffic. They provide information for the top 1,000,000 web sites in the United States. The free information you can find includes site traffic history and competitive analytics; a list of available promotional codes across thousands of online retailers; and site-specific trust scores based on up-to-the-minute data from Compete and third-party security services.
To participate and have your browsing habits compiled along with others you only need to install their compete toolbar found here. Every time you visit a new site, the toolbar will provide you with information about the site, whether it is considered safe, how many other people have visited the site, and other information. Compete works in both Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Nielson and Comscore may be known as the small yet highly targeted sample size, typically polling the user with demographic and other questions before tracking their web usage. Sites such as Alexa and Compete may be known as the much larger sample size with less specific data about each user. That does not mean that Alexa, Compete or others using the toolbar and various other approaches are not valid or possibly more accurate. See the following chart provided by Compete.

Voki release in order to provide better avatar tools to be used with communities and social networks
Voki (pronounced voe-kee), was created for individual and non-commercial use, allowing you to develop an avatar to be used repeatedly. This platform allows for more ownership of one’s “digital persona,” leveraging their existing speaking avatar technology platform. Their redesigned editor reveals a new user interface for users, making the creation of avatars intuitive and easier than before. They’ve also done some backend improvements to make their avatars work better with user profiles, such as those found on social networks and their Partner communities for their API. Some of these improvements for partner integrations will not be released until later this year.
What this comes down to is a free offering of a speaking avatar for you to put on your MySpace profile. This looks like it includes more accessories and features than Oddcast’s SitePal service, too. Voki offers Anime, animal and celebrity avatars to play with, more customization and animation for your avatar’s “world” and better integration with other applications such as your Instant Messenger and mobile phone.
