Optical Character Recognition is “the mechanical or electronic translation of images of handwritten, typewritten or printed text (usually captured by a scanner) into machine-editable text”, according to Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia. OCR allows you to make a scanned images text searchable.
If you scan a document using your personal scanner, you will usually get an image file (TIFF, JPEG) or a PDF that you can’t search through. OCR allows you to convert these into editable text.
